My Favourite Cake
After her husband dies and her daughter leaves for Europe, Mahin (played by the excellent Lili Farhadpour) a seventy-year-old resident of Tehran feels lonely. She dreams of spending the autumn of her life with someone to share the joys and worries of everyday life with. During one of their meetings, her friends convince her to at least give herself another chance at love. Mahin's plan is simple - to break the daily routine and revive the love life she seems to have forgotten about long ago. After learning that an elderly taxi driver named Faramarz (Esmaeel Mehrabi) is also lonely, Mahin decides to invite him to her home and spend a wonderful evening with him. Can passion have a taste? Vietnamese-French director Tran Anh Hung ("Rickshaw Driver", "The Scent of Green Papaya") proves that it definitely does! "Bouillon and Other Passions" (award for directing at the Cannes festival) draws you into the world of excellent French cuisine, but above all it sensually shows that through dishes, flavors and aromas you can express the deepest feelings.
The heroes of the film set in the second half of the 19th century are the excellent cook Eugénie (Juliette Binoche) and the famous gourmet, gastronome Dodin (Benoît Magimel). For 20 years they have been cooking together, creating recipes and throwing great parties. They communicate with each other mainly through dishes, preparing wonderful broths, sauces, quail, turbot, vegetables from their own garden or spectacular desserts. The world they create together helps them survive the most difficult moments in life, and their relationship evolves over the years.
Tran Anh Hung, loosely basing the screenplay on Marcel Rouff's novel and inspired by the real-life figure of Anthelme Brillat-Savarin, combines romance with poetic culinary cinema. It also proves that cinema can convey the extraordinary taste and aroma of dishes, so that the viewer can enjoy every shot. Pierre Gagnaire, a famous French chef, is responsible for the culinary setting of "Bouillon and Other Passions". Not since "Babette's Feast" has there been such a delicious film in cinemas. In a provincial American town of the 1980s, gym manager Lou (Kristen Stewart) falls for the mysterious Jackie (Katy O'Brian) - a hyper-ambitious bodybuilder who dreams of winning a competition in Las Vegas. The candy colors and the rustle of nylon tracksuits do not mask the omnipresent violence committed by local gangsters, led by Lou's father (Ed Harris). When the family cesspool bursts, the girls get to work cleaning it up. But blood stains are as difficult to remove as lies and bad memories.

After her husband dies and her daughter leaves for Europe, Mahin (played by the excellent Lili Farhadpour) a seventy-year-old resident of Tehran feels lonely. She dreams of spending the autumn of her life with someone to share the joys and worries of everyday life with. During one of their meetings, her friends convince her to at least give herself another chance at love. Mahin's plan is simple - to break the daily routine and revive the love life she seems to have forgotten about long ago. After learning that an elderly taxi driver named Faramarz (Esmaeel Mehrabi) is also lonely, Mahin decides to invite him to her home and spend a wonderful evening with him. The story is also a pretext to show how the people of Iran try to cope with the oppressive, conservative regime.

The Passion of Dodin Bouffant
Can passion have a taste? Vietnamese-French director Tran Anh Hung ("Rickshaw Driver", "The Scent of Green Papaya") proves that it definitely does! "Bouillon and Other Passions" (award for directing at the Cannes festival) draws you into the world of excellent French cuisine, but above all it sensually shows that through dishes, flavors and aromas you can express the deepest feelings.
The heroes of the film set in the second half of the 19th century are the excellent cook Eugénie (Juliette Binoche) and the famous gourmet, gastronome Dodin (Benoît Magimel). For 20 years they have been cooking together, creating recipes and throwing great parties. They communicate with each other mainly through dishes, preparing wonderful broths, sauces, quail, turbot, vegetables from their own garden or spectacular desserts. The world they create together helps them survive the most difficult moments in life, and their relationship evolves over the years.
Tran Anh Hung, loosely basing the screenplay on Marcel Rouff's novel and inspired by the real-life figure of Anthelme Brillat-Savarin, combines romance with poetic culinary cinema. It also proves that cinema can convey the extraordinary taste and aroma of dishes, so that the viewer can enjoy every shot. Pierre Gagnaire, a famous French chef, is responsible for the culinary setting of "Bouillon and Other Passions". Not since "Babette's Feast" has there been such a delicious film in cinemas.
