Interwar Warsaw. A young poet, Lucjan Salis, after returning from Zakopane, where he was treated for tuberculosis, moves into a room with a tenant. He wants to believe that he will recover and write. The other tenants – the writer Stukonis, the law student Bednarczyk – and their eccentric friend, "Dziadzia", an artist of life, are similarly unfulfilled, functioning on the margins of reality, and also live in illusions.
