In an interview, Gomes quoted a Portuguese saying that sometimes good things come from bad circumstances. His monumental project, which is a cross between a political essay and poetic cinema, is the best example of this. After the great success of Taboo, the director returns with an equally original and nostalgic, although much more multi-layered story about the Portuguese soul in times of economic crisis. He applies the documentation of the crumbling reality to selected threads from the Arabian Nights, wandering between the past and the present, and between realism and fairytale – both in terms of the use of cinematic means and on the level of the plot. The second part of the trilogy begins with the story of the mysterious Simão – an assassin hiding from the law, considered a local hero. A moment later, he reintroduces Scheherazade to the screen, making her the narrator of this story immersed in timelessness and at the same time current problems. Its great strength – as with the other parts – is the mesmerizing cinematography by Sayombhu Mukdeeprom, a regular collaborator of Apichatpong Weerasethakul.
