The Polish province of the early 1950s and 1960s. Magdalena, a Warsaw theatre actress, comes to her hometown for her grandfather's funeral. Although it seems that time has stopped here, the heroine quickly learns that the place that until now seemed like a permanent point in the world to her is no longer one. Her grandfather's death changes her relationship with the housekeeper Wiktoria, once close, and now surprisingly alien. A line of willing tenants forms for the rooms vacated by the deceased...
