Rafał, publisher and editor of the satirical magazine "Diabeł", is arrested and imprisoned in the same cell with the famous safecracker Szpicbródka and the monk Sixtus, accused of murder. World War I is raging, but the world of prison is a closed enclave, where the writer, detached from everyday life, conducts discussions with himself about literature and art. The idea of a novel, inspired by observations of prison life, matures in him. He himself does not know the reasons for his own arrest, and the information obtained during the first interrogation is not clear: authorship of filthy articles, an insult to morality. It is only in the next conversation with the investigator that he learns about the pistol found in his apartment, with which two people were shot in a terrorist attack. Despite the historical context, the director focuses on the threads of the mystery of human fate and the problem of transience, creating an insightful psychological portrait of the protagonist - a lonely, lost man, not reconciled with the time in which he lives.
