Twelve-year-old Bailey (Adams) lives with her tattooed father, Bug (Keoghan), and older brother, Hunter, in a small town in eastern England. Despite warm feelings and good intentions, the immature Bug devotes more time to his new partner and searching for money-making ideas than to his sensitive daughter. Left alone and misunderstood, the teenager befriends a stranger, the titular Bird (Rogowski). Their summer wanderings, searching for traces of the past, allow Bailey to spread her wings and believe in herself.
