Shakespeare in Japanese? Kurosawa's legendary adaptation of "Macbeth" is a chilling vision blending European sources, an Asian context, and the director's own signature style. The dark story of General Washizu (Toshiro Mifune) and his shrewd, cunning wife, Asaji (Isuzu Yamada), relocates a timeless tragedy about the lust for power and the price of crimes committed in the name of unsound ambition to the 16th-century island of Hokkaido. Kurosawa perfectly complements Shakespeare's dramaturgy (he recalled that "Macbeth" was his favorite play by the Englishman) with a refined visual style inspired by Noh theater and ink painting (sumi-e), and an expressive use of the natural world, particularly fog and rain. Donald Richie called "Throne of Blood" an "icy" work – it is a spectacle that is formally perfect, cruel and visually beautiful.
