Teenager Shao has a heart condition. Before a serious operation, he is sent to his aunt's house to recuperate in a quiet, green area on the outskirts of the city. There, the boy remains under the care of an old housekeeper, Haru. One day, Shao notices an unusual, microscopic creature. It is Arrietty, the teenage daughter of the Clock family. Her family belongs to the species of "borrowers", who live in the nooks and crannies of human homes and live by "borrowing" small but essential things for survival - sugar, cookies, tissues, needles, scraps of material, etc. They do it very discreetly - so that no housekeeper would ever notice the losses. If that happened, the family would have to set off in search of a new shelter. But Arrietty does not run away. A friendship develops between her and Shao.
