A temperamental elderly woman, her Cape Verdean caregiver suspected of practicing voodoo, and her neighbor, constantly involved in various social activities, live on the same floor of a tenement house in Lisbon. When the old woman dies, the remaining two discover a secret from her past in Africa - a story of love and crime. Black and white, stylized as "old cinema", melancholic and charming - Miguel Gomes' film, shown in the main competition at the Berlin festival, was distinguished there with the FIPRESCI critics' award and the Alfred Bauer Award, awarded for innovation in film language.
