At the center of this story is a family that has long forgotten the bonds that unite it. Only the specter of death becomes something that can give a semblance of closeness and lead to a reunion of the sick parents and the adults who lead the turbulent lives of the children. When Gerd, suffering from dementia, ends up in a nursing home, his wife Lissy is left alone. The responsibility for the fate of the aging parents falls on their son Tom, a valued conductor in his late forties, whose life, both professional and personal, resembles one big chaos. Similarly, his sister Ellen, who has a clear weakness for alcohol and married men. However, the characters must remember that escaping responsibility, like everything else in life, has its price.
