Hong Kong 1962. The main couple rents an apartment in the same tenement house. They both feel lonely because their spouses are constantly absent. They start spending more and more time together… In the Mood for Love is a sensual story about unfulfilled feelings and desire that cannot be satisfied. The director barely suggests that passion is developing between the characters. The film is full of subtle understatements, which forces the viewer to fill in the story themselves. There is no literalness here, there are only fleeting glances, touches of hands, unspoken desires. The film takes place in semi-darkness - on rain-soaked streets, in darkened taxi interiors and cramped tenement rooms. Velvety blacks and deep reds dominate. Kar-Wai limits the space, filming the characters in close shots. The movement of the camera, which focuses on the actors' faces, is minimal. Thanks to this, the characters' longing for love becomes more tangible, and the feeling of unfulfillment and sadness - even stronger. In the Mood for Love there is a romantic fatalism. The director tells the story of unfulfilled dreams and wasted opportunities.
