A village hidden among the high Himalayan ranges is home to Pema, who has just married three brothers. When one of them leaves, locals are rife with rumors about the woman's pregnancy. It doesn't take long for Pema to receive news that her husband is missing. She decides to set off into the mountains to find her beloved. The trek is not only a journey through picturesque landscapes for the woman, but also a transformative journey into herself. .
"Shambhala" is the first Nepalese film to be accepted into the main competition at the Berlinale. The film takes on a meditative, sometimes dreamlike form, consisting of monumental views of raw nature and the slow lifestyle of the local community. We observe the traditions and customs of the local culture, in which naturalism meets elements of modernity. A road movie saturated with mysticism and permeated with Buddhist philosophy with a motif of fighting for honor. Pema’s story shows determination to follow her own path and reflection on identity and the role of women in traditional society. “Shambhala” is a subtle experience that goes beyond the stereotypical narrative patterns.
