Marion Crane works as a secretary. She's dating Sam, but she's unsure if their relationship has a future. One day, her boss finalizes a transaction, and Marion is supposed to deposit forty thousand dollars into the bank. It's Friday. Marion tells her boss she's not feeling well and will go straight home after the bank visit. She doesn't show up at the bank, however, but flees with the cash, not knowing exactly where yet. After a long drive, she stops on the side of the road to rest. In the morning, she's awakened by a tapping on her window—a policeman is eyeing her suspiciously. Marion drives into town, quickly changes cars, and drives on. Finally, exhausted, she stops at the sparsely frequented Bates Motel, run by young Norman Bates, who, clearly interested in her, offers her dinner.
