16-year-old Balthazar from Bautzen becomes the "chosen one" thanks to his belief in moral purity, which he wants to maintain. He travels to Dresden, where he studies at a theological seminary, then to Venice, meets the intriguing traveler Pappagello and through him meets the beautiful lutenist, Rosa. Alternately attracted by the Archangel and Satan, he learns to love, defend the truth and forgive wrongs. And the destination of the journey is always an illusion.
