Cynthia works in a factory and struggles to communicate with her teenage daughter. Her brother, Maurice—a photographer who encourages his clients to smile—is himself going through a marital crisis. Following the death of her adoptive parents, a young optometrist named Hortense sets out to discover the identity of her biological mother. Their paths will cross in a way that challenges their perceptions of themselves and their origins.
In *Secrets & Lies*, winner of the Palme d’Or, Mike Leigh explores the lives of characters trapped in a web of unspoken truths, mutual grievances, and a facade of contentment. Humor emerges from awkwardness, and even the most mundane conversation can lead to both startling revelations and a long-desired sense of closeness. At the heart of the film are two central performances: Brenda Blethyn—who received the Best Actress award at Cannes for her portrayal of Cynthia—and Marianne Jean-Baptiste as Hortense.
