Set in the second half of the 19th century in Victorian England, a brilliant young surgeon, Frederick Treves (Anthony Hopkins), encounters a man with an unusual deformity whose appearance condemns him to a humiliating life as a circus freak. John Merrick (John Hurt), who suffers from a rare genetic disorder and is known to fairground audiences across the country as "The Elephant Man," is a man whose life is now lived in. Dr. Treves, who first treated him as a normal person, fights to free Merrick from the misery of his environment and give him a decent life.
